How to Get Your Story on WMC Action News 5

***IMPORTANT: Reporters and anchors never decide what content airs on TV news.  Producers make all decisions to dispatch a camera crew for stories they want in their newscasts.***

I get daily requests from people with three main requests about how to:

  1. Get Camera Coverage: Request a camera to come to an event or record a virtual interview.
  2. Share Photos or Video: Get coverage of a community event by having you send photos or video to the newsroom.
  3. Book a Bluff City Life Appearance: Book an interview with our “Bluff City Life” weekday lifestyle and entertainment show.

Below are specific steps to get coverage. Keep in mind that your event must have community impact and be open to the public.

1. HOW TO GET CAMERA COVERAGE TO HAVE A CREW COME TO YOUR EVENT OR TO RECORD A VIRTUAL INTERVIEW:

The producers (a team of decision makers in our newsroom) arrange for crews to come out to you the day of your event.  After sending an email request, you might also call the assignment desk by 9 a.m. the day of your event as a reminder to newsroom planners.

These are 24/7 contacts

Producers: WMC-Producers@Gray.TV

Assignment Desk: 901-726-0416

NOTE: It’s a good idea to plan to take photos/video of the event yourself and email the images with information about the event to producers that day, in case our crew cannot attend due to breaking news.

2. HOW TO ASK WMC TO POST A PHOTO OR VIDEO FOR A COMMUNITY EVENT:

Compose an email explaining your story proposal.  Be sure to include who is involved, what led to this moment, where this is happening, when this happened or is happening, why this is happening and how this is happening. Include a contact number, photographs, video and important web links.

NOTE: Newsrooms have three shifts: Overnight, day-side and night side.  Each shift has limited contact (mostly email only) with the other shifts because we are in the building at different times.

3. HOW TO BOOK AN INTERVIEW ON “BLUFF CITY LIFE”

You should directly email the producer for the show. Be sure to use a SUBJECT LINE like “Bluff City Life Appearance Request” so the producer knows the email is for his/her specific show.  We each receive hundreds of emails per day, so we need very specific subject lines.

Before you contact producers to request your appearance, make sure you have all the information they need (who, what, where, when, why, how) for your event:

  • Contact number for organizer (not for the public)
  • Name(s) of person(s) to appear on show (no more than two)
  • Organization Name
  • Event name, if applicable
  • Event location, if applicable
  • Date(s) of event with time(s), if applicable
  • Brief explanation of the benefit this event offers the community
  • Cost to attend event, if applicable
  • Press release, flyer, photos and/or video
  • Phone number viewers can call for more information
  • Website(s) where viewers can find more information
